John S. Struck '74, Managing Partner, Wand Partners Inc, New York
A 1974 URI Economics graduate Struck has been a Private Equity investor for 20 years. On behalf of institutional investors, he has acquired and operated small and middle size companies in Europe, Asia and the United States in multiple industries including insurance, agriculture, market research, internet marketing services, woman's apparel and industrial process companies. Struck spent the first ten years of his career at General Electric Company. He and his wife Beatriz built Rhode Island's first LEED Platinum Certified home in Narragansett

Panelists

Water: Dr. Art Gold, Professor of Natural Resource Science, is an expert on water quality. His research addresses the effects of land use, climate and watershed features on water quality. He works with local decision-makers nationally and internationally and seeks to mitigate both cumulative and site-specific effects of human alterations. At the University of Rhode Island, Art is the Natural Resource Program Leader for Land Grant Programs and Associate Director of the Coastal Institute. His current professional activities include service as Senior Advisor to a UN research project on water quality values of wetlands and director of the Northeast States and Caribbean Islands Regional Water Program. Art is a recipient of the URI Foundation Scholarly Excellence Award.

Philosophy: Dr. Cheryl Foster, Professor of Philosophy, in addition to her scholarship on theoretical foundations of philosophy, is a noted expert on issues related to environmental decision-making and quality of life. She is working on the $3.2M IGERT grant from NSF to develop and administer an integrated, multi-disciplinary graduate curriculum to enrich the education of Ph.D. students who show potential for leadership in solving environmental problems in coastal ecosystems. A scholar in the humanities, she examines the humanistic values associated with sustainability. Dr. Foster served as Associate Director of Honors, and was a recipient of the URI Foundation Teaching Excellence Award.

Wastewater: Dr. Vinka Craver, Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, investigates chemical and biological processes related to sustainable water and wastewater purification and the fate, transport, and containment of existing and emerging pollutants in environmental systems. These areas are extremely important considering the need of highly efficient technologies capable to ensure economic, energetic and environmental sustainability of water and wastewater treatment systems and the continuous production and utilization of new xenobiotic compounds products, their imminent release in the environment and their potential negative effects in the ecosystem and human health. Her work addresses novel wastewater purification technologies and management systems, engineering properties of organoclays for pollutant removal, containment, and prevention, and sustainable water and wastewater treatment technologies for developing global communities.

Emergencies: Dr. Jeffrey Bratberg, Associate Professor of Clinical Pharmacy, conducts research on expanding pharmacists  roles in public health, particularly in emergency preparedness and immunization delivery and access, HIV rapid testing, management, and referral in underserved communities. He is both a bioterrorism and emergency preparedness consultant to the Rhode Island Department of Health, and an active member of the Rhode Island Disaster Medical Assistance Team (RI-1 DMAT). He was deployed to respond to the North Dakota floods, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and will likely be providing pharmaceutical care to the devastated citizens of Haiti. Jeffrey helped optimize prevention and treatment programs at the only HIV/AIDS clinic in Nassau, Bahamas, co-writing a country-wide adherence plan with a student pharmacist volunteer in May, 2009.

Logistics: Dr. Doug Hales, Assistant Professor of Business Administration, has over 20 years of operations and supply chain experience in various organizations including the United States Marine Corps, plastics, construction, and consulting industries. He gained experience in international business and logistics - working with German, Japanese and Saudi businesses for the delivery of goods and services. His research has been published in leading journals such as The European Journal of Operational Research and International Journal of Operations & Production Management.
