Celebrating the Leadership of
Robert M. Beagle, 1991-2012

When Robert M. Beagle began as vice president at URI in 1991, the State of Rhode Island was in the midst of a major fiscal crisis and state appropriations for higher education had been cut and tuition and fees were raised. On campus, there was little opportunity for scholarships to attract top students, the University was known as the nation's number one party school and the efforts to reach alumni were limited. There was a tremendous sense of cynicism among students, faculty, alumni and staff.

And it was on the cusp of the University's Centennial Year.

It is from this point that Beagle began to build and then to lead a team of professionals who have all created a new level of pride among the alumni, students, faculty, staff -- and all Rhode Islanders as a result.

From fundraising to marketing to management to alumni affairs to outreach and community building -- many at URI have said that Beagle's leadership created a culture for communication, philanthropy, and pride throughout the community.
